Piccolino
Italian Restaurant Manchester - reader comments

| "I'm
shocked at some of the comments below. I visited this restaurant twice
now, once a couple of years ago and again last Friday for my birthday.
The manager and staff went out of thier way to be friendly
and helpful, even the bar-tender suggested I sample a couple
of wines before we ordered a bottle. The food was to die for,
perfectly cooked, quality ingredients, an amazing experience!
It's a little pricey, but certainly not extortionate,
you do get what you pay for. There is so
much choice on the menu, that I prefer to have a range of
starters rather than a main meal, just so I can try more of thier
fabulous dishes! Busy, relaxed, friendly restaurant,
who know what they are doing. The manager and his staff worked hard
all night! I just wished I lived nearer! Try it - I'm sure you wont
be disappointed."

| "We
went for a nice meal and it was very disapponting at the quality
of the food and service what we got for the price. The only
good thing about the food was the Amaretto Desert. We will not be
going back to this low quality over priced restaurant
again and telling other people not to go."

| "For
a large family party of 20, responsible and just from the theatre,
the maitre'd was uninterested (unless you were obviously a favoured
customer). The restaurant only appeared interested in taking
our money, they over-charged, we inexplicably had to pre-book
the courses weeks beforehand and they didn't offer any warmth
or friendliness. Having come from Wakefield for the evening,
we're less than impressed and we really wish we'd
seen this review page beforehand - we wouldn't have gone. Thanks -
that's helped."

"I regularly eat at other Piccolino restaurants but this was my first
visit to the Manchester unit. I came away with mixed feelings: it
was busy and lively for a Sunday night and the food
was up to Piccolino's usual standard, a tad expensive but
good. I couldn't fault my Crostini starter and Troffiette
main course. But the waiter let the place down for
me. He was a typical Italian waiter, a cheeky chappy who clearly knew
his trade but his habit of disappearing regularly for a smoke was
very annoying. Not only were customers left waiting for attention
but when he did appear he brought a stench of stale cigarettes with
him. Sort him out and my markings would go up a notch" -

"I have to agree with previous reviewers that Piccolino's is
extremely overpriced for 'just above average' food. That
said, they are busy every night and seem to attract a more upmarket
clientelle. The decor is wonderful, if somewhat cramped,
and the staff very friendly - although service
is far from being the best. When they eventually came to
take our order, I had to ask for an extra 5 minutes as I'd completely
forgotten what I'd chosen half an hour before when I'd originally
been given the menu!!! Olives, that I'd ordered, never arrived but
were charged to the bill (£2.75), whilst the Pizza Pollo Parmigiano
was very poor for £9.25. Plenty of tomato sauce
and a soggy pizza base resulted in serious attempts to cut it with
the knife whilst trying to keep it on the plate. The Funghi Ripieni
starter however was fantastic but at £6.25
should have been. Prices of the dishes are very expensive
for the quality of the food you get and to make matters worse
you have to order side portions as extra. At £2.95
and £3.50 a time, expect an expensive night out. I would still
revisit however, after all they must be doing something right to be
full every night!" -

| "Over
priced for the quality of the food which was slightly
disapponting. Relatively small dishes not helped by vegetables
and greens being extra's. Surley a main course should come with vegetables
as standard at these prices."

| "We
went for my daugher's hen party and spent well over £600. Everyone
who had pasta said it was very dry and not nice.
We were practically thrown out of the restaurant because they wanted
the tables. The Manager actually sat behind us on steps, tapping his
feet and telling his staff to get us the bill so they could get rid
of us. I am not too sure, but I think in all we were only there between
one and a half to two hours. One girl was actually refused a drink.
If you want a relaxing meal, good food and friendly staff, then I
recommend you do not go here, we defenitely won't be going back. Needless
to say we did not pay the service charge."

| "I
had dined at Piccolino's previously on a Monday night and had enjoyed
the experience, so when my husband and I wanted to treat some friends
we thought it would be the perfect place. The food was fine
but the service was embarrassing. We felt
we could not say anything at the time as we did not want to make our
guests feel uncomfortable. The food was shoved down without a smile
by a number of different waiters, so it wasn't just a case of a poor
employee, it was a general attitude. I do not mind paying a
lot of money for a meal if the overall experience is good.
We usually tip generously but the service on this occassion was appalling.
I understand they were busy and it was a Friday night but they should
be employing people who can deal with that pressure."
