Cafe Rouge Lowry - our review
review from Sep 2007

Trusted Reviewer"With only a limited choice of restaurants near The Lowry Theatre, it's important to find the right one. Cafe Rouge fits the bill for a quick pre-show bite to eat. The Baguette Poulet, for example, a chargrilled chicken baguette with oregano mayonnaise, was absolutely fantastic and great value for money. The Poulet Breton (strips of chicken breast, leeks & mushrooms sauteed with fresh herbs in a cream & white wine sauce served with herb mash) is also worth a mention.

The prices, especially the exhaustive wine list, are very reasonable - especially when compared to the overpriced Lime opposite. That said, the very friendly waiter talked me out of ordering the Classic Café Rouge 7 oz Steak Frites dish for a 20 oz T-bone Steak from the specials board instead. It was terrible; the taste of charcoal or fat, in which it had obviously been grilled, overwhelmed what should have been a very big tasty piece of meat - quantity over quality here and certainly not recommended. But really, I'm not sure if I was surprised - you can't really expect award-winning steaks in national chains as big as this - the Lowry branch itself is decorated in the usual Cafe Rouge false French bistro style yet is set in a huge retail unit that takes away all that Parisian intimacy. Overall, highly recommended for a quick bite or coffee, stay clear if its a top quality steak you're after though." - restaurants of manchester 22/9/07 (visited on a sat afternoon)

Cafe Rouge Lowry - member's reviews

Trusted Reviewer "We regularly eat here when attending the Lowry Theatre. We find the food consistent and the service is generally quick (which you need if you're going to the theatre). Having worked our way through most of the menu the favourites are the Slow Cooked Lamb, Mussels and Tartlets. We don't usually have starters due to time restrictions. For drinks we recommend the Citrus Presse for the drivers - very good. Reasonably priced consistent quality food - great for a pre-theatre bite to eat" - melanie, wigan 14/4/08 (visited on a fri evenng)

"We attended for my son`s 18th birthday, we were in Salford Quays seeing Darren Day in Dick Whittington and wanted somewhere a little different to eat. Although we didn't make it known, he has an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and often feels uncomfortable when eating out in public, the waiting staff seemed to make him feel special and paid particular attention to his needs. He has asked to return to Cafe Rouge the next time we visit The Lowry in a week or so's time." - sharon weston, ludlow 10/12/07 (visited on a saturday lunchtime)

"The staff are friendly, the food is always good and the atmosphere is relaxed. Even if you only have a coffee you are made to feel welcome and if your'e on your own or waiting for someone, offered a newspaper to read, nice touch if you feel uncomfortable! Not that I ever have because the staff are happy to chat if they aren't too busy. They also do a great childrens' menu and give them an activity pack with crayons etc as soon as you sit down so everyone can relax. I always enjoy eating here and would choose this restaraunt every time whatever the occasion." - carole matley, salford 18/7/07 (visited on a friday evening)
