Beluga Manchester - reader comments

"I found Beluga's food to be very good quality. The service and staff were very efficient and helpful too." - vivien williams, manchester 14/2/09 (visited on a friday evening)

"I was very disappointed with the restaurant at Beluga, we stayed in a gorgeous hotel for the stay in the city but the meal on our first night was terrible. My starter of Fishcake was warm(ish) until I got to the middle and bit through a freezing cold prawn! My boyfriend had a prawn cocktail, very standard and small prawns. We ordered our mains before the couple on the next table. Their's arrived (lamb), ten minutes later our waitress explained they had burnt my lamb (the last one) so I suggested they had given it to someone else! I was asked to choose something else off the menu free of charge. I chose Pork Chops, which were so thick it was hard to cut through, surrounded by mountains of fat and on a bed of sloppy mash, badly presented with far too many apples floating around in the gravy/cider! My boyfriend's Chicken & Chorizo Pasta was more like a dessert, the amount of cream that was on it with tough chicken, which wasn't great either. We paid for the starters and one main course but, to be honest, I wonder why as this was far too much. We didn't stay for desserts and the best bit was the free house wine." - nicola smith, manchester 27/1/09 (visited on a friday evening)

"I just wish we'd read the reviews here before we went to Beluga, as they would probably have persuaded us to go elsewhere. I can only echo some of the previous reviewers comments. We had a table booked for 6pm and when we arrived were given a menu that was not the one shown on their website, had less dishes available and was a bit of a disappointment. Once we had decided, we had to wait quite a while and then attract the attention of a member of staff, as we seemed to have been forgotten about. The starters (chicken wings) weren't that great and took a while to arrive, but the real problem was that by 7.15pm that was still all we'd been given and there was no sign of our main course. Nobody had said anything to us about the delay, but we were sat close to the kitchen and could see and hear that the staff were completely disorganised and didn't seem to know what was going on. Other diners were also asking what had happened to their meals as they needed to leave shortly. At this point we were told that the food was on its way, and it arrived about 15 minutes later. By this time we'd had enough and just wanted to eat and go. The food itself (chicken & chorizo alfredo and mushroom lasagne) was average though the portions were generous. The only bonus for us was that we had a discount card, so it worked out quite cheap, but we won't be returning as the service was so painfully slow and as others have said, there are many better restaurants in Manchester" - phil higson, manchester 19/1/09 (visited on a sunday evening)

Trusted Reviewer "I went to Beluga for the first time last week for a bite to eat after xmas shopping. They had an early bird deal on - two courses for £10 - with four starters, four mains and four desserts to choose from, which I felt was satisfactory for a set menu. The waiter was very friendly and efficient and the food was to a good enough standard considering it was only £10 for two courses. I had Butternet Squash Risotto for starter and a Caeser Salad for main. They were both fairly sized portions and tasted nice with the only fault being the risotto was slighty over cooked. I don't think I would eat here for the al a carte menu but I would definitely go back for a bite to eat after shopping." - claudia, manchester 9/12/08 (visited on a tuesday evening)

"The table was booked for 9pm and we finally sat down at 9.25. When we finally got the waiters attention to order, about 20 mins later, by this time we had not been asked if we wanted a drink at all. Finally got our starters at 10.15, which I have to say the food was very good but when you are getting your main meal at 10.45 its not very good, as you are not hungry by this stage. The main fault with this place is the service, it lets them down big time, so wont be going back" - suzanne, oldham 30/11/08 (visited on a saturday evening)

"A perfect choice for my fiance's birthday. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is beautiful. Maybe my new fav restaurant?" - roz, manchester 19/9/08 (visited on a monday evening)

Trusted Reviewer "When my husband and I arrived at Beluga, there was no organisation, staff didn't seem to know what was going on. We were sent back upstsairs to the bar and every now and again a waiter would come upstairs to see if anyone wanted a table. Beluga was very noisy, loud music, not a place for a romantic meal. The staff seemed to be permanently running around the tables, yet tables around us were not cleared away very quickly. They didn't have the starter I wanted, so we chose a garlic bread to share which was on some kind of nan bread and was just strange! We also had Feta and olives which were lovely but for the price, not worth it! I had the Beluga Salad which was supposed to be chorizo, avocado and egg. I had half an egg, 2 thin pieces of chorizo and no avocado. Very disappointing. My husband had Chicken Caesar salad with pancetta. The salad was not presented well, a big lump of chicken was just thrown on top of the salad leaves and the pancetta turned out to be bacon. Overall, we weren't impressed with this restaurant and will not be returning. The service was poor, the food was ok but not worth the money. There are too many other fantastic restaurants in Manchester." - michelle, rochdale 9/8/08 (visited on a friday evening)

"Food was dreadful. Steak was dipped in meat flavour and the 'Beluga Chips' were frozen wedges I would not serve to my kids. Pub grub ill described as fine dining." - jane daintith, warrington 11/4/08 (visited on a saturday evening)

Trusted Reviewer "We've visited the excellent bar at Beluga many times, and also at it's predecessor, Citrus. For some reason, we've never ventured downstairs to try their restaurant though. When a restaurant scores highly with our reviewers, especially our Trusted Reviewers at that, we're normally straight on the phone to book a table. The fact they took Hi-Life was even better, 2 meals for the price of 1... here we come!

If you're familiar with the small bar at Beluga you'll be in for a big surprise when you enter the restaurant down the stairs. It's a lot bigger than you'd expect and extremely luxurious. There's an open kitchen and some of the most stylish eating booths in Manchester. Our waiter, Dion, was very friendly and helped us through the 2 menus, we opted for dishes from both the a la carte and lunch menus together with two of the extra daily specials he informed us about.

The Wild Mushroom & Bamboo Risotto starter arrived in a stylish but small triangular bowl, served with a Tomato Pancetta - it tasted fantastic but was a tad expensve at £5.95. The Steak Sandwich was also very nice; cooked to perfection and covered in a healthy portion of mushrooms (£8.95). The Seasonal Sausage, served with delicious mashed potato and gravy was also worthy of note and excellent value at £7.45.

All in all, the previous reviews are spot on. Beluga boasts an excellent restaurant deserving of a reputation other than just the bar. There are few restaurants in town offering such lavish surroundings and serving equally as good food. It comes highly recommended!" - restaurants of manchester, 28/11/07 (visited on a Monday afternoon)
