Mount Street Social

Mount Street Social has arrived at the fabulous Midland Hotel!

Taking place on selected Saturdays, Mount Street Social showcases a seasonally changing set menu along with optional drinks packages, all hosted within Mount Street’s bar area, along with fantastic live music.   It all sounds pretty special right?  The RoM team were invited down to sample things for ourselves.

We got things started with a few snacks in the form of a bowl of plump and deliciously briny Gordal Olives, along with some Smoked Almonds.  The ideal pairing with our first round of drinks, in this case an array of cocktails, which were all well-made, to order.  A far cry from some of the premixed, bulk made efforts which are prevalent at similar events.

Drinks packages are priced at just £35 for 6 drinks, which works out at under a mere £6 per drink!  The choice is yours from a selection of cocktails, wines, bottled beers and premium spirits.  Clearly, that’s obscenely good value for a package like this.  Top quality mixology and great quality across the board in Manchester’s grandest hotel.

Next was our proper starters, beginning with Sourdough, Salted Butter and Roasted Bone Marrow.  This was a course in itself, but there was more.  A quartet of fantastic Beef Croquettes with Truffle Aioli followed, along with some freshness and salad in the form of Heritage Tomatoes, topped with a fantastically oozy Burrata.   Then finally for the starters, we enjoyed some crunchy, zingy and super sweet prawn cocktail lettuce cups.

By this point, the live entertainment was in full swing; a fantastic duet of acoustic guitar/vocalist, which were both amplified by those palatial ceilings.  The whole room was having a great time, totally forgetting that there were inside on a fantastically sunny Spring afternoon.  It was sunny inside Mount Street too!

Main Course/s arrived all at once, and literally filled our table with pleasure.  The centrepiece was a whole 4 portion Steak and Ale Pie, plus accoutrements, plus a few more side dishes just in case you’d not already received enough!  Without going into food-geek detail on the lot, the list included;

• Smoked Haddock Rosti, Spinach and Hollandaise
• Cumberland Sausage Toad in the Hole and Onion Gravy
• BBQ Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese
• Smoked Mashed Potato with Crispy Onions
• Seasonal Green Vegetables
• Roasted Butternut Squash with Truffle Honey
• Baby Gem Courgettes, Walnut and Parmesan Salad

A glass or two of wine each was the perfect match, and by this stage, we were all full to the point were no more was needed.   But, as we know, a separate pudding stomach is a biologically accurate thing, so we pressed on with every intention of filling that too.

Dessert comprised of everyone’s favourite pud; Chocolate Brownie, which was accompanied by whipped vanilla cream and honeycomb.  A spin our out city’s iconic desert followed; a Manchester Tart Opera Cake.  Layers of creamy delight.  Next and last up was a divine apple sorbet with Compressed Apple and Ginger Crumble.  Whilst being simple, this was a table favourite, and finished off all that richness perfectly.

We may have had a few more drinks to make the most of that amazing value drinks package, but don’t tell anyone, since we were there to be professionals as per usual.

We finished up and gladly left a weighty tip before heading off into the sunshine outside.  As we stood under those grand arches out of the front of the hotel, one of the group asked ‘shall we grab another drink somewhere’.  The group consensus was a no, simply because we had nowhere to fit anything else, so a taxi home it was, to digest and do very little for the rest of the afternoon.

The menu was on the verge of changing over to something a little more Spring/Summer in feel, and admittedly, eating a hearty pie and lots of lovely carbs, when it was 23c outside felt a bit mismatched, but then you can’t foresee the Manchester weather.  Still, we had an amazing time and Im sure that you will too!
